Issue 14 of the Canon Professional Services (CPS) newsletter is now online.

This edition contains information about the recently-announced EOS 5D, EOS 1D Mk II N, Speedlite 430EX and EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM lens. The interview with Matt Hoyle is excellent. There are also good articles on photography agencies, understanding histograms, digital exposure, and interviews with several other photographers.

Make sure you sit down with a big cup of coffee and a decent slab of uninterrupted time to really enjoy this one!

Mat Cutting and Window Placement

Joe Miller, fine art photographer, has a few good articles on matting photographs as well as tools to calculate cuts for the window:

While you’re at the site, have a look at Joe’s photographic portfolio. He mostly shoots 6×4.5 and 6×7 medium format, and has some stunning images in there.

Here’s an interview with Australian wildlife/landscape photographer Geoff Murray – Artist Showcase: Geoff Murray by James Morrissey.

Geoff lives in Tasmania and shoots mainly with large-format view cameras. He sells prints from his web site, and stock photos via two small stock libraries, but is mostly supported by his day job. He has an application in to travel to Antarctica to take photographs under the Australian Antarctic Division’s Arts Fellowship program – let’s hope he’s successful, the images he’d take would be amazing!

Pet Photography Interview: Ken Phillips

Here’s an interesting interview with a pet photographer – Artist Showcase: Ken Phillips by James Morrissey.

Ken works with an animal hospital, shooting patients and medical procedures, and shoots pets and people portraits as well. He discusses both the photographic and the business side of what he does in this interview. It’s interesting how seasonal pet photography is – the vast majority of Ken’s work comes in November and December, with people wanting pet portraits for personalized greeting cards and gifts, but he also gets a ‘puppy rush’ in Spring.

Producing Your Own Photography Book

Darren wrote this at 12:49 pm:

Michael Reichmann from The Luminous Landscape is currently in the process of publishing a book of his photographs from Bangladesh.

He’s using 100 Books Publishing Company to print the book, and seems very happy with the price and quality, even for small print runs (under 1000 copies).

There’s a lot to preparing a book for publication, and Michael describes the process in quite good detail. It’s not a small project to undertake, but it is within reach for any photographer with a portfolio of 75 or so high-standard photographs and the money to back it.

Down at the bottom of the article there’s a link to email Michael to register interest in this book. It’ll only cost USD$29.95 + shipping and handling, which is a real bargain for anyone interested in seeing the work of a prolific pro. I’ve signed up for my copy!

Alain Briot Shoots Digital?

Darren wrote this at 2:45 pm:

Well-known landscape photographer Alain Briot has finally come out of the closet – he has announced that he now shoots with a 1Ds Mark II!

Until recently, Alain has mainly been shooting with a 4×5 view camera, with smaller 645 cameras for when he needed portability. The large negatives give him fantastic enlargement opportunity up to 40×50 inches, but for smaller sizes he finds that the 1Ds Mark II holds detail almost as well, and is much more convenient to work with. He particularly loves the immediacy of digital – being able to come home from a shoot and start reviewing and working with the images straight away, rather than waiting a week or two for film to be processed and scanned.

The article has some nice comparison images, as well as brief thoughts on other digital issues such as battery life, camera weight, handling, sensor dust, focusing screen, lens choice, and color spaces.
