Opacity - Photography of Urban Decay

Darren wrote this at 6:00 am:

If you’re interested in the photography of abandoned buildings, then Opacity is the site for you.

Once a building no longer serves its purpose, and all of its functionality ceases to exist, it becomes truly fascinating. Each room is transforming into something new at its own rate, yielding to the forces of nature as it reclaims man’s creation. The corrosion and decay paint vibrant colors across otherwise dull surfaces, lit only by natural sunlight spilling into the spaces at unaccustomed angles. Each object left behind becomes more significant than it has ever been, hinting at the life prior to its disuse. Floors collapse and walls cave in without care; if you get hurt, no one is here to help you. This is a lonesome alien world whose dark corners and peeling walls have gotten a hold of me and many others; this affinity for derelict structures and often dangerous excitement is the core essence of urban exploring, in my opinion.

Be sure to explore the photo galleries - there are some truly amazing shots in there. I love the textures and the isolation, and the incredible lighting in many of the photographs.

Apple Announces Aperture For Pro Photographers

Darren wrote this at 8:08 pm:

Following weeks of speculation, Apple has announced Aperture, a digital photography workflow, organization and editing application targeted to professional photographers (and high-end amateurs!).

Aperture’s workflow support means you can use it to import directly from cameras and storage devices/memory cards, review photos, tag with metadata, organize photos into projects and albums, keep ‘master’ RAW files together with images derived from them, support for archiving and backing up photos, tracking of backup status and location of all images, non-destructive image processing (color correction, cropping, curves, sharpening, channel mixer, rotation, noise reduction, etc), seamless Photoshop integration, multi-image compare and select tools, color managed output, printing, integrated layout and authoring for web output and book printing, and much more.

If, like me, you don’t do a lot of editing of your final images (just levels, exposure, color correction, cropping, sharpening, etc), then Aperture could more or less replace Photoshop in your workflow.

Make sure to watch the demo video - impressive!

Aperture will start shipping in late November or early December, with a retail price of USD$499.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out the new higher-resolution PowerBooks and the Quad-Core PowerMac. I’m seriously considering the new 17″ PowerBook.

Medium Format Pinhole Lego Camera

Darren wrote this at 7:37 am:

Check out this: Adrian over at FoundPhotography.com has built a medium format pinhole camera out of Lego!

Not long ago, he also used Lego parts to convert a Polaroid 95a Land camera for use with 120 roll film.

Now that’s a resourceful photographer!
