Photo.net Learn Photography

Darren wrote this at 12:16 pm:

If you want to learn more about photography, Photo.net’s Learn section is a great place to start. Or if you have a friend who wants to learn more, this is a great place to send them!

If you’re completely new to the hobby, read the Beginnners section first. It’ll give you a good background in light, lens, film, exposure and camera choices.

As your skills develop, your questions will become more specific – the Taking Pictures section has a lot of great articles on topics like portraits, gardens, architecture, ruins, underwater, studio, sports, street photography and more.

The Caring For Equipment section is probably worth a read for any photographer, especially those using cameras with detachable lenses and other accessories.

Photo.net also has discussion forums, photo reviews, interviews and lots of other ways to lose time to photography too.

Konica-Minolta and Sony Team Up

Darren wrote this at 7:18 pm:

Konica Minolta and Sony have announced an agreement to jointly develop digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras. I can’t really tell from the press release whether they’re each developing their own line of bodies that share the Konica Minolta lens mount, or if they’re working together on a single line of DSLR body – it just says they “will begin joint development of advanced and feature-rich digital SLR cameras”.

You can read the press release at DPReview.

Olympus E-300 Firmware v1.3 Released

Darren wrote this at 12:20 am:

Olympus has released firmware version 1.3 for their E-300 DSLR. According to their press release, the changes include:

  • Enhanced exposure metering stability: To provide even more precise readings and give photographers more control over their compositions, the stability of Digital ESP and Centre-Weighted-Average metering has been improved.
  • Button Timer: Photographers can now set the time period for how long a modified setting remains active until it reverts to the basic setting of the mode currently in use. This customised interval setting option lets users tailor the camera better to their specific requirements.
  • Two new underwater scene programmes: Together with the PT-E01 underwater case and ports for the Olympus E-300, plus the wide range of accessories, photographers can now fully explore beneath the water’s surface. Two new scene programmes, Underwater Macro and Underwater Wide, have been specifically created for underwater photography.
  • Changed start-up process for future lenses: Looking to the future, the start-up process has been changed to support interchangeable lenses that will be released as the E-System range continues to grow.

The Adobe® Bridge 1.0.2 update delivers overall improved stability and performance. This update is recommended for all Adobe Bridge customers.

Most Reliable CD-Rs Available?

Darren wrote this at 8:05 am:

If you’re worried about the (short) shelf-life of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, this product may be for you. Delkin is claiming their Archival Gold CD-R is the most reliable CD-R on the planet, with a storage life of 300 years. They’re not cheap, though, at USD$136 per 100!

I haven’t used these, let alone tested them, so you’ll have to decide for yourself whether to believe the marketing hype or not.

Phase One’s Medium Format Digital Roadmap

Darren wrote this at 9:20 am:

The Luminous Landscape has a great article, Phase One Takes The High Ground, detailing that company’s product roadmap for the next 18 months or so.

The most amazing product on their roadmap has to be the Phase One P45, an almost-full-sensor medium format digital back with a 39 megapixel imaging chip. Wow. An uncompressed full-size 16-bit image from this camera weighs in at a whopping 224 megabytes! Fortunately the camera’s lossless image compression format brings that down to a 47 megabyte file. That’s still only 21 images on a 1 GB CF card, though!

Phase One is also introducing the new P30 and P21 digital backs, with 31 megapixels and 18 megapixels respectively.

Usually when a company announces new products this far out from delivery, it kills off demand for current products. Phase One has a very cool way to prevent this. You can buy any of these new backs today, and they’ll give you a P25 (if buying the P45) or a P20 (if buying the P30 or P21) right now. When the new backs are released, you simply swap it for the new one. They also have a great upgrade plan, whereby existing owners of P20 or P25 backs can upgrade to the new ones for a quite reasonable price.

The article also lists some recent Phase One announcements about wireless transfer for P backs, faster CF card performance, Capture One upgrades, and upcoming support for Adobe’s DNG RAW format.

Konica-Minolta New Lenses and DSLR

Darren wrote this at 9:25 am:

Konica-Minolta has announced the new Dynax/Maxxum 5D digital SLR. This is a smaller and lighter sibling to the Maxxum 7D, designed to compete with entry-level DSLRs such as Nikon’s D50 and Canon’s EOS 350D. It does still have the same in-camera anti-shake system as the 7D, though. Read the press release and specs over at DPReview.

They have also announced several new lenses for the Dynax/Maxxum series of SLRs:

  • AF 35mm f/1.4 G lens
  • AF DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 (D)
  • AF DT 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 (D)
  • AF DT 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 (D)

Again, the press releases are available at DPReview here for the 35mm prime, and here for the other three.
