OpenRAW Web Site Launch
Almost every make and model of mid- to high-range digital camera has its own proprietary format for storing the raw data from its sensor. The manufacturers then supply (often ugly) software for processing their raw files and converting them into more openly-accessible formats such as JPG or TIFF.
The problem with this is that the manufacturers may not continue to support their raw-processing software into the future, especially for older cameras. It only takes one or two OS revisions to render the old software useless. Photographers can end up left with a huge number of digital photographs that can no longer be accessed.
The OpenRAW organization aims to encourage manufacturers to at least document their raw file formats so that software developers can support them into the future.
So how does this fit in with Adobe’s new DNG standard? They have a page explaining OpenRAW vs DNG.
